Anyone watch? I saw a few episodes on HGTV then binged all the ones I missed on HULU. I like the idea of these two trying to save old houses in their town. I like them better than Chip and Joanne who foisted their kids on us every episode and at least this Mississippi couple appear to be more gay friendly those Waco freaks.
by Anonymous | reply 352 | July 14, 2020 7:23 PM |
I'm not so sure. It IS Mississippi after all. This show just seems to be pandering to the rural market, which is fine.
It's nice to see these dying towns get some makeup, but they are still dying towns and I doubt they'll be able to sell these homes after the renovations.
They most likely made the show to either capitalize on the Gaines' success or to provide a back-up in order to stymie any demands that the Gaines make.
Where do the production crews live for the season? Holiday Inn? EconoLodge? Seriously - those are the options in Laurel, MS.
I can't relate to them. But it's catnip for people who don't live in urban areas.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 9, 2020 4:38 PM |
The town seems fairly prosperous to me. Antique shops, cutesy little cafes. Must be a suburb of a larger city. Kind of like Houstonians (me) going out to Wimberly or Gruene for a weekend.

One of the wives best friends is quite clearly gay as a goose too.

R2 - no, it's in Laurel, MS. It IS the big town around there. Strangely, they have a larger than normal amount of famous people from there.

At least one of their friends owns a bed and breakfast, so I assume that the crew lives there, at least some of them. I do like them much better than Chip and Joanna, who I won't watch now that we know their views on gays....
The Home Town folks did at least one house for a lesbian couple.

Filled with f*ckable studs. The tall hunky contractor is freaking sexy as hell. The cute two brothers who are friends of Ben's and ride around with a lot are sexy, especially the little blond one, who helps Ben out a lot in his cabinetmaking shop. I'd ride that little devil for days. They seem very gay-friendly. They've had at least one lesbian couple, and in their recent shows, they featured an older gay couple. Plus they have lots of black clients, which Chip and Joanne seemed to do VERY unfrequently. The floor specialist seems like an old queen to me -- he's really sweet but has unusually good dental work for a typical redneck floor guy. Recently they've had on a young guy who is a design consultant who's obviously gay but somewhat shy. Cutey pie. As you can tell, I'm a big fan of this show.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 9, 2020 8:45 PM |
I like the little guy in the wood shop with his hat on backwards very goofy hot with a nice tight little body. And I have seen at least two lezzie couples so they're just fine by me. I hate Chump and that half Korean bitch wife of his, I can see her slaughtering puppies for breakfast.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 9, 2020 9:07 PM |
Love this show.
It's nice to see a reno show where the houses don't cost one to two million dollars and another $200k for renovations. And I love that they re-purpose so many materials.
Ben and Erin have great chemistry on camera and often say shit that makes me bust up laughing.
I think they're aware that they have a gay following because when Erin said no one would want to get into a tiny bathtub with Ben, he said, "There are a lot of people out there who would love to get into this tub with me." Then smiled slyly to the camera and Erin broke up laughing.
What surprises me is that the show is produced by HGTV Canada, not the American parent company.

They had an unmarried woman and her mother on today so they are so non-judgemental vs. Chump and Cruella de Wacko, it's not even funny.

by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 10, 2020 10:24 PM |
I can't stand watching Chip and Joanna. Chip's "antics" aren't funny in the least, just highly annoying. The reveals are just commercials for their home décor line, with close-ups of the pieces in their line. They might as well add the prices and a link to order online.
Ben's "boys" are all really hot and I'd love a tumble at the old swimmin' hole with that little blond guy with the backwards baseball cap who helps Ben a lot in the woodworking shop.

Ugh, his voice, OP. I cannot TAKE his voice. And its not the accent, it's how his voice comes out the back of his nose and throat at the same time. Sets me on edge to the point I can't watch more than 90 seconds of it.
And if I can't stand it, that means that is one ungodly voice, because I learned to tolerate Christina El Moussa-Amstead's braying and Nicole Curtis's nasal Michigan twang.

One thing I appreciate is they don't have their kid on tv like the Gainses. I hated that so much of their shows featured their stupid kids (the woman must be pregnant constantly) and "idyllic" little farm. They always showed the kids running in the new home with drinks and food in their hands and I'm sure it was product placement for their bakery. My mother was visiting one day and while drinking wine and watching, she said those kids would've gotten a broom against their ass if they they'd tried that shit in her newly cleaned home.

I had a dream this morning that Ben and Erin were in a Hallmark movie called Home Town Mystery.
The movie was the premise of their show but during the renovation they found a skeleton under the floor.
The house belonged to a man who was co-owner of a local business and everyone believed he had moved away.
The other owner of the business was still alive and was the person who told the town that this guy had upped and moved away to Alaska.
At one point Ben is walking around downtown and all the ladies and calling out "Hi, Ben!" and he's loving the attention until he bumps into Erin.
They found out that the living owner wanted to sell the business back in the 1940s but the dead guy didn't want to because he wanted to convert the factory for the war effort.
Sadly I woke up before the ending.

Lost my respect for Chip and Joanne when he used the term, I believe it was “cornhole”, like it was a bad thing. Given HGTV’s gay following, I’m surprised there hasn’t been more criticism of Chip and Joanne.

Most of the Waco weirdos fans are die hard christian fraus. My mom who is an avid HGTV watcher can't stand them. Says they are too phoney, drag their brats on the show too much and Joanne is fairly one note. Interesting in the beginning but got old and when she found out how uber conservative christian they were she lost complete interest. Plus she said Chip acts like an overgrown frat boy.

R143, I saw it, also. I miss John Gidding. He's such a cutie.
Interesting bio, too:
John Gidding (born January 7, 1977) is a Turkish-American designer, television personality, and former fashion model.
Gidding started modeling in 2000 as a graduate student, performing runway shows for Armani, Gucci, and Hugo Boss before being represented by Wilhelmina Models in New York City. Before entering the design profession, Gidding was the spokesmodel for Jhane Barnes in 2004 and 2005. He's also been on the covers of numerous romance novels.
He was voted one of "Yale's 50 Most Beautiful People" in 1999 by Rumpus Magazine, one of "Boston's 50 Most Eligible Bachelors" by The Improper Bostonian in 2002, one of "Atlanta's 50 Most Beautiful People" by Jezebel Magazine and as one of Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles's "Emerging Talent: Twenty Under 40" in 2008.

I have always detested subway tile but she did one bathroom in a beautiful translucent longer subway tile that had small bubbles in it. She did the pattern in a double herringbone pattern done on a carry corner. It was gorgeous.
Why does everyone pick those plain solid subway tiles?

..” he likes "dinge" in the opening?” R150 My husband and I were floored by that new opening phrase included. Erin and Ben are most likely too young to know the racist connections in that word. Many times I hear younger kids using phrases that my racist grandfather used.

Love this show. They are a cute couple, and I so want to do nasty things to Ben Napier.
Like others have noted, the show's charm is the fact that the homes and renovations are affordable and their re-use of material. They don't destroy the character of the homes. They also have some sense of design. Joanna just puts up a barn door, a long table "for entertaining" (something which most people never do as much as they say they will), or an "art piece" that means something special to the couple (invariably a biblical verse).
Plus, that Mississippi town is charming. Have you people ever been to Waco? Seriously?

Joanna is a one trick pony just like the divorced couple on Flip or Flop.
Joanna's go to's are subway tile, open shelving, plain straight mantles and beige/cream/wood
On Flip or Flop they only use Grey/Black/White---period.
On Home Town they enhance the home as much as possible, use various colors on the inside and the outside & layer in furnishings. The homes look welcoming, warm and not cookie cutter. Add to it Ben/Erin are engaging, fun & have no stick up their asses like the Flip/Flop couple & aren't cloying/fake like the Gaines.

I mean, it might, at best, elevate the DIY brand. Right now it's an second rate HGTV, but mostly because it's not as available as HGTV.
As long as they keep showing Restored and Brett Waterman's hot ass, we're OK.
by Anonymous | reply 208 | May 1, 2020 6:16 PM |
I long ago decamped for DIY as apparently HGTV is only about those Twincest queens or Love it or list it .
by Anonymous | reply 209 | May 1, 2020 6:36 PM |
Furniture and houseware lines branded by HGTV hosts don't do well. Drew and Jonathan Scot have been pushing a line for a while, as have the Gaines clan with their Magnolia Homes collection. The only people buying Chip & Joanna's stuff are the Becky's and Karen's of the midwest and south.
I'm so done with most of the shows on HGTV, which is sad because I'm a long time fan of the channel. However, Home Town gets my attention as does Good Bones with Mina and her mom Karen. Both groups of folks are down-to-Earth, caring people who aren't preachy or churchy (even though Ben does seem to come from a religious background with his daily bible reading, etc.).

OP, I also love Home Town. Only found it recently and have already seen every episode. What I like to see, from my costly perch in CA, is the low price of those charming old homes and the great job they do restoring and furnishing them. The style of the places they do is comfy and inviting. I'm enjoying the whole fantasy of the quaint small town. I also like the couple, they don't get on my nerves like other design hosts do. They seem natural and quirky. The wife's clothes are perfect for her. Not quite uber frau but they fit her style. But, it is Mississippi after all and I could never live there. I do know a very liberal woman who resides in one of those towns and she's doing her best to buck the tide.

R236 good question.

by Anonymous | reply 240 | May 6, 2020 8:27 PM |
I thought about that too R236. I think they actually do the whole thing and divide the film in to two parts. It makes no sense to furnish the ground floor then do construction upstairs. It's a plot line flaw.
I like Bargain Mansions but it's not one of my favorites. And her vocal fry, the girl needs voice lessons.
by Anonymous | reply 241 | May 6, 2020 8:44 PM |

Cruising is probably non-existent these days. There used to be a couple of restrooms on the interstate that were busy, then they started to post state troopers there, and now I think they are closed. Ole Miss had some supposed tea rooms in the library and another building but I never saw anything going on there. The Natchez Trace had some restroom cruising but they made a bunch of arrests and that stopped. I don't think there are any adult bookstores in the whole state. I would assume there is some action via Grindr, etc., but really have no idea.

Does anybody know if the furniture and decorative items that Erin places belong to the new homeowners?
Or are they like the fraudster hypocrites from Waco?
The brothers buy stuff for the family owners and I wonder about the cuties in Laurel.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | May 20, 2020 12:54 AM |
R251, Erin said she uses lots of the owners own stuff. The furniture that Ben makes and the stuff she makes are gifts. Some of the other stuff is kind of a welcome basket from laurel local vendors and some is purchase optional but it's mostly the owners things.
by Anonymous | reply 252 | May 20, 2020 1:19 AM |
A lot of the furniture and decor are staged items. After filming, the homeowners are given an inventory list with prices and have the option of buying what they want to keep.
But yes, more or less may be the owners' stuff and what the the show makes for them are gifts.

I watched a Good Bones episode on Sunday that I had never seen before. Karen & Mina renovated Mina's father's home with his second wife.
His second wife looked to be about 5-8 years older than Mina. Mina was so nervous about pleasing him as he was very picky. They did a very good job.
by Anonymous | reply 255 | May 20, 2020 1:18 PM |
Not really Daddy issues. Her father HATES change, as evidenced by the collection of clutter and crap in the home. He's not a hoarder, but does he really need 17 pieces of furniture in one room, for example? He has strong opinions about what he DOESN'T like, but can't explain what he DOES like. Changing someone's home when they've had it a certain way for years and year and is resistant to change is challenging.

I saw a Home Town repeat that just blew me away.
A 70-something year old black lady had a total budget of $85,000 to spend. They found her a shack for $35,000 and they renovated it from top t bottom for $50,000. It was just beautiful. It boggles my mind that you can get a home much less a tricked out house for that price.
I don't think I've ever seen a more excited homeowner on HGTV. They did an amazing job.
by Anonymous | reply 262 | May 22, 2020 12:32 PM |
Yeah, R262, that was a beautiful episode. She loved her raised garden!!
The son was attractive. ☺️
by Anonymous | reply 263 | May 22, 2020 7:36 PM |
That was the restaurant owner R262. Love that little house. One of the homes they did came up on the market awhile back. A beautiful little cottage with a porch for two transplanted doctors. The had to relocate again.
by Anonymous | reply 264 | May 22, 2020 10:12 PM |
I agree that episode was touching and I truly believe the remodeling was done well and with love. If you have noticed, they have subsequently met for lunch and filmed in her cafe. True home town people.

I watched My Lottery Dream Home last night. David was quarantined at home but he contacted 2 past winners to see how they're doing in their homes.
OMG! He looked so fabulous in the past episodes. Not a single tattoo and not so ghastly thin.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | May 23, 2020 1:05 PM |
Agree, R267. David looks like a circus freak now, with those crazy tattoos on the front of his neck and the Phyllis Diller costumes he wears. He was much more attractive in his earlier days.
by Anonymous | reply 268 | May 23, 2020 3:32 PM |
I know David is kind of a hot mess, but I have to admit, I love watching him flaunt his big gay MARY ass in these little provincial towns with no apologies and making everyone around him deal with it.
I don't think he's had any gay men on the show yet? Maybe we just don't do lotteries. However the other day I saw an episode with a cute little latino thug looking guy, who looked like Mamma's dream version of caged meat, however he was single and sooooo friendly with David. At the end of the episode when they have the "Family and Friends" over to celebrate their new home, he was accompanied by a very good looking black gentleman and a battalion of cane wielding old lesbians. This is in the middle of nowhere Massachusetts, too.
by Anonymous | reply 269 | May 23, 2020 4:43 PM |
There are a lot of winners from Massachusetts, Florida as well.
He looked like a hot mess on his show last night but he is still adorable. I hate all the tats.
His condo is tiny! I thought the network paid better than that 😛.
I also loved his Easter tree, I wonder who the shirtless guy was that was helping him decorate. They didn’t show his face.
Anyway, they’re doing another show next week.
by Anonymous | reply 270 | May 23, 2020 5:31 PM |
The best part of last night's episode was revealing that David hooked up with the cousin of the first woman. They even showed a pic of the cousin with David. The cousin was a hottie.
The second lady was one of my favorites. She was the feisty senior citizen from Cambridge who hit the lotto. I'm so glad they revisited her because she was such a trip.
David's condo was tricked out for Easter.. He said he goes really all out decorating for the holidays. He showed photos of how he decorates for Xmas, Halloween, etc. Last year he had 40 something trees in his place. The most shocking thing to me was his bed. The rest of the condo's decor was that glam vibe but his bed was a very plain black iron bed. It was dressed beautifully but the bed didn't mesh IMO.
David's appearance may have totally changed but he really has a very engaging and sweet demeanor.

Forgot to mention his Halloween costumes! They were amazing and he looked fantastic!
Of course, he has his professional make-up artist bestie, so that helps.

Anyone watch last night's Bargain Mansions?
How in the world can she do such massive renos with such a small budget?
The first phase was $75000 and it entailed the ground floor and all the outside. The outside included building a carriage house with a 2 car garage and a substanial driveway as well as the usual thins. Then the ground floor had to have all new floors, a custom kitchen, rebuilding a fireplace, adding a laundry room, etc...
How can you do all that & have gorgeous fishes for $75000??
She also had a $75000 budget for phase 2 which was reno-ing the second & third floors.

They showed the episode with Shuff's fine ass again today.
Tonight's new episode was two fat bears who may or may not be a couple, and they renovated a house to be an efficiency AND a cafe.
by Anonymous | reply 315 | June 2, 2020 5:46 AM |
I couldn't figure out the two cafe guys. Were they brothers or a couple? I missed the first few minutes.
by Anonymous | reply 316 | June 2, 2020 11:09 AM |
I think they had to be lovers. Why else would they buy a house with only 1 bedroom?
by Anonymous | reply 317 | June 2, 2020 3:04 PM |
R317 I got the feeling that they lived elsewhere, the efficiency was just a crash place so if they worked late and opened early they could sleep there.
But I think they shared their other house so yeah, lovers seems a likely explanation.
by Anonymous | reply 318 | June 2, 2020 4:41 PM |
I still like this show but after binge watching all of the seasons I got a little burned out. Now, I just watch from On Demand and fast forward through boring parts. I don't need to hear "I like a little dinge" ever again. The show paints a lovely fantasy of small town life, but just a bit too cloying.

I was watching HGTV today and a commercial came on for a new show starting Thursday called Design at Your Door.
All of the main HGTV talent will be participating.
Any way, they showed a clip of the woman from Bargain Mansions & she was totally unrecognizable. I had to rewind & I only ID'd her because of her voice.
She has either lost a ton of weight and/or gotten a face lift. I think both. It also looks like she cut off that limp stringy hair. It was bouncy, lush & wavy.

He wore the shirt from his campaign for the first time in that episode, and then of course they are selling the shirt now, too.

I suspect GOP, R342.
But Ben strikes me as a decent sort of GOP'er - gay friendly, more interested in local business stuff. (All of his friends seen on the show are part of the Laurel Chamber of Commerce so that seems to be a possible reason why he ran.)
